You're welcome, Fulle. I'm glad you liked them. I'm not sure which channel has broadcasted RoV film before,
but I'm guessing it would be one of those boutique cable channels like Bravo. Bravo shows a lot of older European films, many of which are obscure and virtually unknown to the American audience.
Say, for example, "Babette's Feast" -- a touching story about two Swedish sisters whose lives are changed when they welcomed a former French chef into their home ...
around the time of French Revolution! (see, it's RoV related, sort of ^0^)
Anyway, please let us know when you find out the broadcast times for German TV.
I'm sure many fans would be interested.

I can't believe my eyes when I read "Babette's Feast"...
I thought I was one of the very few people watched this film. ^^
Actually, I think with the US movie industry, generally, TV stations broadcast the "Hot" and "Hip" shows.
(Many times, there are a lot of nudity and violence involved in these programing...)
My experience also tell me that there are more great anime titles available to the French programing compared to the English ones.
For exampl: Cat's Eye or the Astro Boy. I guess for many North Americans, tv animation (or in their words: cartoon)
is generally intended for children. Thank goddess to fan sub/dub, they are chaning the "trend" in a way.
But, please give me a break from EVA, the secret of its popularity always remains a mystery to me. ^^

Oh my God!... I can't believe this... Ming Yi also watched the "Babette's Feast"...
It's just because it is not a main stream film to watch. I used to watch foreign films every week with my sister back in Taiwan.
We always try to watch foreign films, because we knew we will be studying abord soon. Actually, my sister is the thoughtful one. ^^
I just went with her. I recalled the beautiful gorment dishes better.
Another note is that:
Amy, do you know usually when does the CELGA placed the bid for you? It's 3 hours until it ended..
I know it is not healthy to sit in front of my computer watching the staus, but I just can't seem to pull myself away.

Yes yes! I remember drooling over Babette's dishes. By the way,
did you know that the film was based on a short story of the same name (by Isak Dinesen)?
The film follows the story very closely. Oh, and I made a booboo earlier. It should be Norwegian,
not Swedish, sisters.
Kelly, Celga usually place bids within 2 hours of the closing time.
I do that quite often too, just to make sure their bid didn't get buried under another sniper's.
(for older manga series, there seem to be a lot of bidding at the very last minute, *_*)

I haven't seen many RoV sites and it's good to see one! *nods, nods*
RoV is one of my favourite series and Ikeda Ryoko is a wonderful writer.
RoV has been translated into Indonesian many years ago (it's out of print now)
and it's very famous in Indonesia =D So is Ikeda's other work, Window of Orpheus,
which I've yet to find a website about..... (GnK is even more famous, though ^^;)

It's amazing how much this series influenced my reading habits. I started reading "Wuthering Heights",
"Carmilla", "Little Women" and many other books after seeing them in GnK.
Then I got into Kabuki plays and Noh masks. Even in literature class years later,
I kept seeing Maya's face superimposed over the Noh masks. ^0^ <-- from Amy's GnK otaku diary
Back to RoV ... It's so wonderful to see these classics being published in so many languages.
And it's a bit sad that some translations are out of print.
Is any of Ikeda's works still in print in Indonesian?
Most of the Chinese editions have gone out of print.
By the way, I listed a couple "Window of Orpheus" sites in my links page.

After months of rumors on the net, the DVD release is now official.
The 1979 RoV film will be released on DVD in Japan. The release date is Nov.22.
Note that the film is re-titled "Berusaiyu no Bara, Catriona MacColl".
The retail price is 4700 Yen, plus consumer tax and shipping (if mail order).
You can pre-order it at Amazon (see thread #9 below).
I'll add a direct link to my links page in the next update.
I'd also be happy to write an instructions page for ordering, if anyone is interested.

It has summaries and analysis on "Catherine the Great" (Jotei Ekaterina/女王情史),
"Napoleon" (Eroika/英雄交響曲)﹐and "Rose of Versailles"
(Versailles no Bara/玉女英豪/凡爾賽玫瑰).
The book is written by the same group of writers who did Animation Comics 2000, the one with discussion on Glass no Kamen.

Yes, Ang Lee is great.
I've seen a lot of his movies. He can handle both western and eastern topics very well.
Besides, since RoV is created by Japanese, it would be fine if the film was directed by Taiwanese.
Moreover, Ang Lee is now a famous director in the world, which would make it easier to get sponsorship.
Finally, we fans could make our contribution in this matter by writing letters to persuade him.
Originally, I think James Cameron is a good choice because his Titanic is really great which successfully combined historcal event with fictional characters
(just like RoV). However, he is more difficult to reach compare with Ang Lee. So Ang Lee is still the best choice.
I think Ikeda sensei would be happy to see her masterpiece being directed by such a prominent director.

I've heard that the film of RoV is quite disappointing,
but many fans still want to take a look of it since we have no other choice.
How I wish there could be a new RoV film which can better satisfy our desire of RoV.
Why don't we write a letter to Ikeda sensei (or leave a message in her official website) and
suggest her to think about making a new film of RoV. I believe if She was willing to write a script,
it would be an excellent one. The next step is to find a prominent movie director who is interested in the story.
The director must be good at dealing with historical and romantic subjects.
For example, Steven spielberg (Schindler's List), James Cameron (Titanic, so tragic & romantic, I like it.), or even Ang Lee.
I am just dreaming, huh. But I do think it is worth trying. Amy, you are so good at Japanese,
maybe you are the right person to write this letter. What do you think?

Hmm...that sounds like a good idea.
Ikeda-sensei was saying that she wanted to promote ROV on the international scene, and has been soliciting compositions for her Italian ROV opera idea.
So I think she would be receptive to the idea of an updated film. Sponsorship, I think, would be the toughest barrier.
In either case, if history is of any indication, I've a feeling she may not write the actual script.
The movie studio is more likely to hire a seasoned script writer than use a prominent author
(knows the camera takes/choreography better, cheaper fees, and quicker turn-around).
But she would still have some input since it's based on her book after all.
I've written dozens of fan letters to the author in my head, but never got around to mailing it.
(heck, I was even nervous about posting on her bbs server!)
I'll definitely mention it when I calm down a bit and write the letter.

I would if copyright wasn't an issue. I could get away with the English translation because it wasn't completely translated,
but I think I'd be inviting trouble if I did the Chinese. Plus I think the Tongli and (from the little I've seen) Chang-hung versions are pretty decent.
Both have some expression problems and historical inaccuracies, but not significant enough to make me want to throw them in the trash.
Besides the complete manga, I'd be happy to work on Berubara-related stuff in Chinese. I'm working on the anime lyrics now,
and would probably do some of Ikeda's interview articles.

I'm afraid it would be tough to locate a VHS copy, since it's quite old and didn't do well when it was first released in Japan.
Used bookstores and video collectible stores are be your best bet.
Still, there's a chance you could get a DVD copy, if it would work for you.
The film has been released in DVD as Italian-English, dual audio tracks earlier this year.
I saw some Italian website selling it. Here is a site that can take mail orders and answer e-mails in English: http://web.tiscali.it/
Another way is to e-mail David Simmons, the Canadian webmaster of the 1st (?) English "Rose of Versailles" site.
He has a work-able copy and says he would make copies for people. Here's the link:

Although I would like to take the full compliment on this guestboard, (^^) but I can't take the full credit.
This CGI script is by Kent. I put all the credit info at the page end. I made some alternation though.
I am sorry to say this, but a lot of the free CGI or guestboard service provided for the English users are eye-sore to look at...
With the Japanese CD/DVD, I don't know why it is much more expensive in Japan. I can relate one time on my trip to Japan:
a music CD by Bobby Brown is retailed at around $5000 Yen, whereas in Canada, it costs only $18.00(Cdn) I think you may check for its' availability with http://www.hmv.co.jp ,
http://www.amazon.co.jp or other online Japanese music store.

Oops, I stand corrected. ^_^ Kent's web has a lot of nifty bbs scripts, and it seems like lots of Japanese websites are using some version of his scripts.
About the Lady Oscar DVD ... I had forgotten about Amazon Japan. Just went to check and found something that could be it.
The title is "Berusaiyu no Bara: Catriona MacColl" (Catriona MacColl is the actress who plays Oscar in the 1979 film).
It looks so expensive (4700 Yen) that I think it might be the updated release of the Lady Oscar film.
It won't be available until Nov.22, though Amazon is taking pre-orders. Here is the link:

The italian DVD of Jacques Demy's LADY OSCAR film hasn't yet been released.
The company YAMATO probably will release it, but no final date has been informed so far.
Since I am in direct contact with Yamato, this is a 100% reliable info. ^_^;

(You are the light, I am the shadow) is the most beautiful expression of love I've ever seen.
But I have a small question to ask. Does "boku" mean a servant in Japanese?
In Chinese, the character of "boku" (僕) means servant.
I wonder if it had the same meaning in Japanese.

Kelly, you're right. It does mean a bit more than just "I/me"
(I was thinking of only the grammatical patterns when making the comparison to "I/me").
"boku" is usually used by men when speaking with other men AND women. However, "ore" is usually used among men themselves.
It's considered a bit "rough", so guys tend to use "boku" when speaking with women.
In ROV, the only reason, I think, Andre and the other men use "ore" in front of Oscar is that she is raised as a man and has been using "masculine" speech all along.
In fact, if I didn't know Oscar was a woman, just by her speech alone I would have assumed she was a man.
Note, though, guys tend to adopt a more polite sounding pronoun when talking to their superiors or in more formal situations.
And in ROV manga, at least, the noblemen use more polite pronouns than the commoners. Andre, for instance, usually uses "ore" but switches to "watakushi" when talking with Oscar's father. On the other hand, Oscar's father and Fersen use "watashi" consistently except when talking to Antoinette and the King
(in which case they would switch to "watakushi"). Oscar also uses "watashi" and "watakushi" in the same way.
Just goes to show you that "watashi" is really not a "feminine" pronoun as Japanese language textbooks will tell you.
(Burn the books, I say! ~just joking~)
