[ Rosalie goes to the Bertin dress shop and is given a job in the kitchen.   On her way home, she meets her neighbor and learns of her mother's accident.   She runs towards home and discovers her mother lying next to a horse carriage on the street. ]

Rosalie:	Arggghhh! Mom!   Mom! Why aren't you in bed?
Polignac:	What are you doing? Hurry, move the carriage!
Bernard:	Wa- wait!   Are you just going to run away like that?
Crowd:	Yeah, yeah!   Get off the carriage!
Polignac:	Don't let me get involved in this mess! I can't leave the carriage!
[ Polignac's carriage takes off, with Rosalie in pursuit. ]
Rosalie:	You devil! Why, my mom ...
Polignac:	What are you doing ...   Such evil eyes. Come to Versailles if you have any complaints! (/you're always welcomed at Versailles if you have any complaints)
Nicole:	Ro- Rosa ...
Bernard:	Miss!   Your mother is calling you.   Hurry!
Nicole:	Ro-sa-lie ...
Rosalie:	Mother! Hang on, Mom! Don't die!   Don't die!
Nicole:	Rosalie ... I'm so sorry for all that have happened till now. You're not my real daughter, only someone else's child I promised to take care of. Please forgive me.
Rosalie:	Mother?   Are you in pain? Have you lost your mind?   Mom!
Nicole:	Give, give me your hand.   My Rosalie! Forgive me.   Your real mother is ... [ coughs ]
Rosalie:	Huh?   You aren't listening to me! What are you talking about? Pull yourself together, Mom!
Nicole:	A noblewoman ...   [ breathing hard ] Mar-tine Ga-bri-elle ...
Rosalie:	A noblewoman?   Martine Gabrielle?
[ Nicole dies ]
Rosalie:	Oh ... Mom!   Mom! No!   No!   Don't leave me by myself! Don't leave me by myself! [ wahhhhhhh ... ]
Rosalie:	[ flashback to Nicole's words ] {{ Your real mother is ... Martine Gabrielle ... Martine ... I'm not my mom's real daughter.   Not her real daughter ... No, I don't want to live any more. Why?   Why does God torture me so? Snatching all my loved ones away ... [ flashback to Polignac's words ] What are you doing ...   Such evil eyes. Come to Versailles if you have any complaints! Come to Versailles if you have any complaints ... A dress with blue flowers ... blond hair }}
Bernard:	Miss.   How long are you going to stay there? It's not good for your health! The burial is already over. This may sound cruel, but you can't bring back the dead. If you run into trouble, come to talk me anytime. My name is Bernard Châtelet.   I'm a newsreporter in Paris.
Rosalie:	Oh, oh ... I'll, I'll kill them! Oh, oh ... I'll kill them!   I'll kill them! I'll kill them all, all the nobles!

 

This scene sets the stage for Rosalie's later meetings with Oscar, Polignac, and Bernard.   Rosalie is an important minor character by virtue of her connections to all the instigators in the major events -- Jeanne in the Necklace Affair, Polignac in confrontations with Oscar, and Bernard in the Black Knight affair.   Through her these seemingly irrelevant characters become linked with Oscar in a dramatic way.   Without Rosalie, Oscar's encounters with these historically based figures and events would seem rather forced, more like a series of unrelated adventures than interlinked events with emotional intensity.   For more comments about Rosalie, see Rosalie (in-depth).
