SCENE 5

André carrying Oscar home after bar fight

Reference:   Shueisha bunko 2, 191-192 (tankoubon 3);   anime ep.22

[ 1783.   The American war of independence has ended.   As the soldiers return to France, Oscar and Antoinette eagerly await Fersen's arrival.   Oscar starts to worry when there is still no sign of Fersen after most soldiers have reported home.   Distraught over the idea of Fersen's death, Oscar drags André along to a Parisian tavern.   At the tavern, Oscar's heavy drinking attracts other customers' attention and leads some to taunt her for having a beautiful face.   Oscar strikes back angrily, attracting yet another pair of customers, Robespierre and Bernard.   The other customers turn on Oscar when they hear about her Palace Guard position, and soon Oscar and André are exchanging fists with the crowd. ]

[ Exhausted, Oscar and André fall to the ground.   André picks her up and begins their journey home. ]

André: Oscar!   Oscar!   Are you there?   (lit. are you dead yet)
Gosh, you're really too impulsive.
Luckily no one found out you're a woman.
Eh, let's get a carriage.
Whaaat?
Son of a bitch!   Those scoundrels took my wallet!

Oscar, poor thing ... How you must suffer.
No matter how you try to hide it,
you're still a woman ...
Sometimes ... it may be too much to bear such overwhelming pains alone ...

[ kisses Oscar ]

Ah, the stars are so pretty.
Let me carry you like this till dawn.
[ Tears roll down Oscar's cheeks ]

This kiss is the first between André and Oscar.   At this point, Oscar does not know for sure who kissed her but seems to have remembered the sensation well.   That memory will come back to haunt her during her meeting with Gerodère and confession of love to André.

Now, as for her tears ... who knows why she cried?   My guess is that she is crying because of a number of things:   fatigue from fist fights, anxiety over Fersen's whereabouts, and relief at being cuddled and taken care of.   The kiss disarms her and brings down her brave front, thus releasing all those emotions welling up inside her.
