 Manga

[ Oscar sits quietly in the dark, pondering about her meeting with Fersen earlier in the day.   André comes in.   The two reminisce about André's first arrival at the de Jarjayes.   Then Oscar starts sobbing.   André becomes upset and asks whether she is thinking about Fersen.   When she does not answer,   André grabs her by the shoulders and refuses to let her go. ]

André:

I love you! < ... > Oscar ... Oh, how long has it been? Whenever I see your smoky blond hair skimming over your nosetip ... your eyelashes like silk threads dyed in the color of the night ... your eyes afloat like the Orion at the brink of winter ... your breaths flowing into the sweet air ... my body burns with a feverish passion. My heart becomes restless ... < ... >

[ André pushes her to the bed and rips off her shirt.   Shocked, Oscar starts crying.   André releases her and pulls the bedsheet over her body.   He the apologizes for his actions and starts to walk away. ]

André:

During these 10 years you were the only woman I saw, the only woman I thought of.

 

 Anime

[ Hoping to try out the French Guards on her own, Oscar tells André not to accompany her any more.   As she walks away, André sighs and comments on her decision. ]

André:

A rose is a rose whether it blooms in red or white. It will never become a lilac.

[ Oscar turns around in anger and starts shouting at André.   André pushes her to the bed and rips off her shirt.   Shocked, Oscar starts crying.   André releases her and pulls the bedsheet over her body.   He the apologizes for his actions and starts to walk away. ]

André:

For 20 years you were the only woman I saw, the only woman I thought of. I love you.   No, I couldn't help loving you.

 

As the anime title suggests, André is still a "green lemon," an immature, young man who still has to learn about sharing love.   In this scene, he fears losing Oscar so much that he tries to possess her by force.   The manga has André deliver a long monologue that speaks beautifully of his love.   Definitely another passage showing Ikeda at her best.

In comparison, the anime assigns very few lines to André, choosing to emphasize his actions instead.   Yet the shorter speech is lyrical in its simplicity and leaves a strong impression.   While I prefer the manga for the more vivid imagery, I think the anime also sums up André's feelings nicely.   Who can forget something like "bara wa bara da" (a rose is a rose) ?!   ^_*
