SCENE 11

Oscar wonders about her feminine role

Reference:   Shueisha bunko 3, 268-270 (tankoubon 6);   anime ep.30

 Manga

[ After hearing about Gerodère's proposal, Oscar protests angrily at General Jarjayes and storms out of the room.   She sits alone in her bedroom, glancing at her violin dejectedly. ]

Oscar: {{ Marriage?
To bear a strong, capable child?
He's got to be crazy to come up with such a silly idea.
Me getting married?

But ...
But what have I done with my life?
With my youth ...

On that day during my eighteenth year ...
Why could I only appear as a man before Fersen?

Year after year ...
There's only one thing, only one thing ...
Hiding my heart aches under my uniform.
But why?

I could only conceal my forbidden, first love.
And finally have I gotten over it.
But why?

Why did I do all this?
And now I am to go back to being a woman? }}

 Anime

In the anime, the scene shows Gerodère saying good-bye to Oscar when she returns home.   Then Oscar finds out about his proposal through Granny.   She retreats to her room and chuckles at the thought of Gerodère as her suitor.   As you can see, this says nothing about Oscar's feelings about marriage or her feminine role.   Oscar's one-liner and laugh are also too short to transcribe.   Please see ep.30 for details.

This scene from the manga shows Oscar doubting her purpose in life for the first time.   Before, she sometimes wonders about her military career, duty to Antoinette, and role as a woman -- but never in great seriousness or all of these at the same time.   Here, Oscar finds herself questioning everything she has come to believe.   The scene paves the way for her later confrontations with her parents and struggle to find her path in life.
