SCENE 15

Oscar tells Gerodère her love for André

Reference:   Shueisha bunko 3, 351-357 (tankoubon 6);   not in anime

[ Oscar and Gerodère walk toward the garden in the moonlight. ]

Gerodère: What is it you want to tell me?
Oscar: Gerodère, do you really love me like you said earlier?
Gerodère: In all faithfulness, you're the only one I love.
Oscar: Do you promise that it's true love?
Gerodère: I promise.
Oscar: Well, Major Gerodère.
Surely one wouldn't wish unhappiness on his loved one.
Gerodère: Of course not.
Oscar: There is only one man ...
He is frightening ...
He can't live if I marry another man.
He loves me so dearly ...

If he can't live,
if he ends up unhappy,
I too shall become the most unhappy soul on earth.
Gerodère: Is it André Grandier?
For him you will give up marriage for life.
You love him, don't you?
Oscar: I don't know ...
I never thought of him that way.
Only as a brother ...
{{ No, perhaps more than a brother,
sharing my joy, pains, all of my youth throughout these years ...
Our souls are so close in spirit that I didn't realize my own feelings ... }}
Gerodère: {{ If he ends up unhappy, you too will be unhappy. }}
Just this is enough.   I'll accept your words.
If you end up unhappy, I too shall become the most unhappy soul on earth.
Oscar: Gerodère ...
Gerodère: Please accept my only proof of love.   I will withdraw (my proposal).

[ kisses Oscar's hand ]
{{ Beautiful woman ...
I just want to place you next to the other gods in the temple of Olympus. }}
[ Gerodère walks away ]
Oscar: {{ To withdraw is your only proof of love.
So there's love like this among human beings too.
As human beings ... such kind of love ... }}

One of the things I find touching about Gerodère is his gentle, persistent love for Oscar.   And here we have another example that, sadly, didn't make it to the anime.   This scene is also interesting in that it occurs right after Oscar's escape from the rioting crowd.   It seems like Oscar is about to tell all the men but André about her love for André.   André is probably not going to run away, so she can hold off her confession of love.   Meanwhile, we the readers are getting antsy about Oscar's delay and worrying about André's suffering. (~Sigh~)
