[ July 13, 1789. After declaring her wish to join the revolutionaries, Oscar leads her troop towards Tuileries Square. The crowd stops them on the way. Oscar then persuades them that she is on their side and, with Bernard's help, wins their trust. As the people wait in the Square, the French Guards charge into the German cavalry front. Oscar dodges a bullet and turns around, only to find André shot in the chest. In shock, she orders retreat and leads her troops racing towards the Square. The crowd watches as Oscar kneels besides André. ]
| André: | What's wrong, Oscar? Why are you crying? |
| Oscar: | André, marry me. After the battle is over, take me to a small church in the countryside, and promise to make me your wife before God. |
| André: | Of course I will. Of course. But, Oscar, why are you crying? Why are you crying? Am I ... dying ... ? |
| Oscar: | Don't say that, André! |
| André: | Oh that's right. That's right. It can't be. Everything has just begun ... the love between you and me, the dawn of a new age. I can't die at a time like this. I won't ... die ... [ dies ] |
| Oscar: | We watched the sunrise together in Arras that day. Let's see that sunrise again, André. That marvelous sunshine ... together ... The two of us ... sharing the joy of being born, meeting each other, living for each other ... [ realizes André is dead ] André! André ... ! André! Are you leaving me behind? André! |
[ That night, Oscar rides through Paris in her white horse. Upon crossing a bridge, she encounters some troops and is thrown off her horse. She begins to fend her way out of the surrounding soldiers, crying as she runs away. ]
| Oscar: | I loved you, André ... Perhaps since a long time ago. Only I realized it too late. Had I realized my love for you much sooner, we would have shared much better days. You were so quiet, so gentle, always by my side ... such that I didn't even realize my love for you. Forgive me, André. Not realizing one's love is more sinful than betraying one's love. Tell me, André. Is it all over now? |
